What are interlocking paving blocks?
Interlocking paving is one of the most widespread types of concrete paving and is a highly durable building element. It is produced by pressing and vibrating a concrete mix. Its name comes from the specially shaped side locks that fit precisely into each other when laid. These locks prevent the individual blocks from shifting against each other under horizontal and vertical loads.
Quality concrete paving is characterised by low water absorption, frost resistance and high load capacity. It therefore provides a stable surface that does not crack or crumble and, compared with poured concrete or asphalt, has a significantly longer service life.
How to choose outdoor concrete paving?
The Hagro range includes proven concrete elements for any type of outdoor project. For classic firm joints with a strong interlocking bond, interlocking paving is the ideal choice, while for a timeless straight design, classic square or rectangular concrete paving is suitable.
Our range includes two main types of concrete paving in various colours and thicknesses:
Interlocking paving: Available as full blocks and as edge or half blocks.
Classic paving: Rectangular or square blocks.
By shape of concrete paving
Paving blocks: The square or rectangular format provides a clean, elegant design that is easy to combine. A popular choice for terraces and simple paths.
Interlocking paving: Elements with a specially shaped profile that creates a firm mechanical lock once laid. Ideal where there is loading and maximum stability of the surface is the priority.
Choosing by paving thickness
40 mm: Ideal as paving for pavements, terraces, yards or garden paths without motor vehicle traffic. The advantage is lower weight and easy handling during laying.
60 mm: The standard for passenger car traffic when creating parking spaces or driveways.
80 mm: Reinforced outdoor concrete paving designed for heavy loads. Used on busy driveways, areas for trucks, construction sites and industrial yards.
Advantages of outdoor interlocking concrete paving
High mechanical resistance: Withstands intensive loads and impacts, and with thicker blocks also the high pressure of vehicles without damage.
Frost resistance and chemical stability: Outdoor concrete paving withstands frost, de-icing salt and UV radiation, so it retains its strength and colour.
Easy repair and removal: Unlike homogeneous surfaces, interlocking paving can be taken apart. During excavation work or utility repairs it can easily be lifted and relaid.
Water permeability: Water seeps naturally through the sand joints into the subsoil, reducing the load on the drainage system and preventing puddles on the surface.
Versatility: Paving blocks can be used on industrial sites as well as at residential buildings, for a variety of purposes.
Uses of interlocking concrete paving
The versatility of these concrete products allows their use in both the private and commercial sectors. The choice of a specific type and thickness depends mainly on the purpose of the area and the expected load:
Paving for pavements and pedestrian zones: Used for paths around the house, yards, walkways or garden paths, such paving creates a reliable, anti-slip, safe surface for year-round use.
Driveways and parking: Interlocking paving is also suitable under cars thanks to its high load capacity. It is therefore one of the most popular materials for creating car parks. Such paving is also used for driveways to family houses, companies and industrial sites.
Steps and slopes: Interlocking paving solves differences in terrain efficiently and, combined with kerbs or slope blocks, allows the creation of stable, attractive steps.
Base under tent halls: Interlocking paving serves as a quick, flexible and versatile base for storage or industrial halls. Thanks to its high load capacity it handles the load of stored materials and the work of heavy machinery, and allows firm anchoring.
Price of interlocking paving
The price of interlocking paving depends on its thickness, shape, colour and surface finish. The final costs must also include kerbs, bedding gravel, silica sand for jointing and transport costs.
Interlocking and concrete paving is nevertheless an inexpensive alternative to monolithic surfaces, both in terms of initial costs and maintenance. It is a solution that does not need a large maintenance budget and, thanks to its durability, is extremely cost-effective.
