7 tips for quick maintenance and care of a tarpaulin hall
|
Tarpaulin halls are a great solution for seasonal and year-round storage, industry or agriculture. They are flexible, quickly assembled and affordable. However, in order for them to last as long as possible, fulfill their purpose and serve reliably for many years, they require regular maintenance and cleaning.
To get started, you just need to follow a few procedures and principles – you don’t have to spend whole days on maintenance. With proper maintenance, a tarpaulin hall can last up to 30 years. We have prepared 7 practical tips for you on how to care for your tarpaulin hall and what to do to make it last as long as possible.
1. Regular inspection and cleaning of the hall
At first glance, it may seem that a tarpaulin hall can withstand almost anything, butregular visual inspection is essential. You should inspect the hall at least once a month, especially after strong winds, storms, rain or snowfall. Try to focus on damage that you can see with the naked eye – kinks, tears, holes, loose joints or changes in the tension of the tarpaulin.
As everywhere, here too, there is no need to overdo it. An arched or saddle tarpaulin should be rinsed from time to time with clean water, a mild soap solution or common cleaning agents. Avoid aggressive acid-based cleaning agents, which can damage the protective layer of the tarpaulin and cause its degradation. You can also use a sponge for cleaning, but be careful and use it only at a distance of at least 30 cm from the surface.
2. Protection from adverse weather
Adverse weather conditions such as wind, snow, UV radiation, storms or heavy rain can have a negative impact on the tarpaulin hall. Therefore, it is very important that the tarpaulin and the structure of the tarpaulin hall are properly anchored, tensioned and have protection against harmful UV radiation. In the case of a large layer of snow and ice, it is advisable to remove these deposits.
In some cases, it is possible to place the hall in a safer place, for example, to the lee, away from trees, away from high unanchored objects, or in areas that are not affected by elevated groundwater levels in the event of downpours. Also consider additional shading or impregnation of the tarpaulin, which will extend its service life.
3. Stability check and basic maintenance of the structure
The steel structureis the skeleton of the entire hall – if something fails, the consequences can be fatal. Therefore, it is important to check all screws, joints, feet and anchorages at least once a year. It is also recommended to check them after extreme weather (e.g. downburst, heavy rain, strong gusty wind).
If you notice signs of wear, the best thing to do is to repair the damaged piece immediately or, in case of major damage, replace the entire component with a new one.
4. Proper tension and anchoring of the sail
The sail must not be too loose, but not extremely tight. Too loose means a risk of tearing in strong winds, while extreme tension can lead to the material cracking when temperatures change (the material expands in summer and contracts in winter).
Regularly check the tension of the sail, ideally during weather changes, when the material may expand or contract. Proper and solid anchoring is also important – preferably in concrete or on a stable, solid surface.
5. Prevention against moisture, mold and corrosion
Moisture is the silent enemy of every tarpaulin hall. If condensation accumulates inside the hall, it can lead to mold formation or gradual corrosion of metal parts. If the hall is located in a humid environment, mold can be removed with commonly available anti-mold products.
Good ventilation can help – for example, air vents or mechanical ventilation. If you store sensitive goods, use special moisture absorbers. Regularly check that water is not leaking through the seams on the tarpaulin. All defects must be removed in a timely manner.
6. Quick repair of minor damage
Torn tarpaulin, loose seam or minor damage? Fix it right away. Even a small problem can turn into an expensive intervention within a few days. For minor tears in the tarpaulin, use repair tape or adhesives designed for PVC materials. Damaged screws or loose parts of the structure should be tightened or replaced immediately. Prevention is much cheaper in this case than repair after long-term neglect of the tarpaulin hall.
7. Proper storage of the hall when not in use
If you only use the hall seasonally, it is important to store it properly after dismantling. Only fold the tarpaulin when it is dry and clean, preferably in the original packaging or plastic box to minimize the risk of damage or mold.
It is ideal to store the structure in a dry place– even unfolded. If you have a storage room or shed, it will serve perfectly. Don’t forget to treat all parts before storage – especially metal parts with a suitable protective oil against corrosion.
In conclusion
Maintenance of a tarpaulin hall doesn’t have to be lengthy or complicated. Just follow a few basic rules, keep things under control and respond to small problems in a timely manner. Thanks to this, the hall will serve you for years without unnecessary complications.
